Reckless speeding has long been a problem on Florida’s highways, and now the state is cracking down with a brand-new law that introduces steep penalties for the most dangerous drivers.
Signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, the Dangerous Excessive Speeding Act takes effect on July 1, 2025. This legislation is part of Florida’s ongoing effort to make roads safer by targeting extreme speeding behavior that puts other motorists, pedestrians, and law enforcement officers at serious risk.
What Does the Law Say?
The new law specifically targets drivers who:
- Exceed the posted speed limit by 50 miles per hour or more, or
- Drive 100+ MPH in a way that endangers others or disrupts the normal flow of traffic
Penalties Under the Dangerous Excessive Speeding Act:
- First Offense:
- Up to 30 days in jail
- $500 fine
- Repeat Offenders:
- Up to 90 days in jail
- $1,000 fine
- Multiple Violations Within 5 Years:
- Driver’s license suspension for up to one year
These penalties make it clear: Florida is no longer treating extreme speeding as a minor offense.
Who Is Most Likely to Be Affected?
This new law casts a wide net, but certain drivers are more likely to face charges under the Dangerous Excessive Speeding Act:
- Young or inexperienced drivers tempted to race or drive recklessly
- Drivers on long, open stretches of highway where it’s easy to unintentionally speed
- Repeat traffic offenders with a history of reckless or high-speed driving
- Commercial drivers, who may face career-ending consequences for a conviction
Why This Law Matters, And What To Do If You’re Charged
Speeding tickets are one thing but this law creates a criminal charge with potential jail time and long-term consequences. A conviction could affect:
- Your ability to drive
- Your insurance rates
- Your criminal record
- Your employment (especially if you drive for a living)
If you or someone you know has been cited under this law, don’t wait to seek legal help. You may have more options than you think, from contesting the citation to negotiating reduced penalties.
